Prior to the rise of social media, it was so easy to believe that we had a small voice in a vast sea of politics and bureaucracy. And rightfully so.
Unless it was election time or a referendum, it was much harder for our voices to be heard in unison when it came to the day to day issues. Yes, we did have mainstream media, but the openness, the ability to share and unite together on what we stood for and create a real movement, was not as prevalent as it is today.
The beauty of a movement is it really only takes two people to start it; the leader, and the leader of followers. Social Media has helped us take a movement from it's genesis point to critical mass. It has proven to be an empowering medium for social cause.
Look at recent events in Egypt, where social media, emails and texting, helped a generation of young, educated adults voice their deep frustrations and desire for social change in a country that was under authoritarian rule for over 30 years. A revolution was born.
It lasted 18 days.
On February 11, Mubarak stepped down.
Then there are other countries such as Yemen, Tunisia, Iran, and Bahrain that have been impacted through social media. And of course, let's not forget non profits either - > Non Profit Case Studies
So what does all this mean?
You have a voice.
No matter how big or small the cause, YOU have the power to change the circumstances you're in. From Lisa Middleton starting a petition to help the Maeng family stay in Canada , or Jenn Marr (Harley's Heroes), Matt LeBlanc (Art for Life) and ACRI raising money for Cancer, you can create change. Period.
What movement will YOUR voice start? Or what cause are you passionate about?

I just recently learned of Derek Silvers and connected the dots. It hit me that he was the guy behind CDBaby and some other wonderful works that I quite enjoyed. WHAT an inspiration this guy is! I recommend reading his blog entry on "fish do not know they are in water" or something to that effect.. It really makes you think!
