2009 has been a big year for tech growth. From the snowballing effect of Facebook and Twitter, to the spawning of new social media tools/applications such as bit ly. and blip.fm, my guess is tech advancements for 2010 will be no different. Here are my predictions:
Augmented Reality – Print Publication Savior
From Esquire, BMW, Dorito's, USPS and even Transformers all using Augmented Reality marketing strategies, it's clear that “AR” is here to stay. I believe this will be the "Savior" of major print publications, media, and paper advertisements, resuscitating the dying industry by meshing virtual & physical realities and providing readers with a higher level of interaction and engagement.
Microsoft Rebranding:
Microsoft has made some strong attempts this year to regain market share after Apple and Google's dent. From the subpar results of the Bing (Because It's Not Google") which was supposed to be a major competitor to Google's search engine, to the i4i infringement lawsuit and possible pull of Microsoft Office suite, Microsoft is in serious need of a makeover and rebranding to meet today's evolving markets.
Search Engine Functionality- A Paradigm Shift:
With the social media sites like Twitter redefining search engines to now operate in real time, search engines will become even more organic and proactive in nature. Based of our personal preferences, they’ll take on a personality of their own by suggesting relevant content, similar to how sites like Digg or Stumble operate. Also, visual based search capabilities will emerge so that you can search not only using text, but with images.
Debit, Credit card, or iPhone?
Now that smartphones are nearly a household appliance, payment methods will change. Smartphones will be used to make mobile payment transactions having a "paypass" likeness to them. Imagine, your very own personal debit machine!
Personal ID Aggregation:
We use several different forms of identifications on a daily basis. I foresee 2010 having a stronger push towards aggregating personal identification such as your health card, driver license, social insurance card, and passports into one central location, accessible through a secured smartphone/tablet application. However, I don't see is this gaining the majority of nationwide public approval right away (Us & Canada). For this to happen, keep your eyes peeled for a major international event that will sway the general public in this direction.
Acquisiton of Bit.ly:
Ok, so this is a prediction that was made by someone else, but I have to agree. Bit.ly won't go long before being acquired by a big player. The URL redirection service with real-time link tracking generates enough attention to take notice.
Social Media - Viral Marketing Strategies:
With Pepsi's recent announcement that they'll be pulling out of the Super Bowl ad lineup, investing 24 million in social media strategies. Don't be surprised to see more big players hop on the proverbial band wagon. Like the Hadron collider, major corporations will attempt to recreate viral “big bangs” within the internet universe through social media marketing.
What are your predictions are for 2010?
